The unfortunate passing of news anchor Peter Jennings is a painful reminder that quitting smoking is not enough to ensure future good health. Cancer grows slowly in its initial stages, but increases its development over time, often with very few early warning signs. Once cancer has started it does not care that its host has stopped smoking. This cancer lives off of glucose, which is abundant in the American diet in the form of sugar, alcohol, and carbohydrates. Cancer is also a very clever disease. It creates protection shields around the cancer cells that prevent the body’s natural protection molecules, T-Cells and B-Cells, from gaining access to the cancer.
Common health screening tests also do not often identify the early stages of cancer development. The PSA test of prostate cancer produces many false positive results, as do mammograms, the standard test for breast cancer. Blood tests do not normally include cancer tests such as the CA 125, which is used to monitor the presence of various types of cancer in the body.
Conventional medicine offers very little in the form of cancer prevention strategies, but natural or holistic medicine offers many scientifically proven prevention strategies. These natural strategies all begin with the importance of nutrition, both in terms of boosting the immune system and reducing the level of glucose or sugar in the body. Glucose not only feeds the cancer cells (300-500% increased uptake of glucose compared to regular cells) it also suppresses the body’s natural immune system and the immune enhancing nutrients consumed with foods and supplements. If blood sugar levels are reduced via decreased consumption of sugar, simple carbohydrates and alcohol, the growth of cancer cells can definitely be slowed down. Then, foods and supplements containing vitamins C, E, A, and B6, as well as zinc, omega 3 and 6 fats, arginine, glutamine, alpha lypoic acid and curcumin have been shown to attack and contain cancer cell growth. These are just a few of the nutrients which have been shown to have cancer-fighting capability in human studies, animal studies, and in vitro studies in the laboratory.
Another powerful natural cancer prevention strategy involves systematic detoxification in order to remove as many of the pathogens and free radicals from the body as possible. By reducing the toxic load in the body, the immune system is better able to deal with any cancer cells which may be present. As many as one billion cancer cells can be present in the body that are undetectable by the typical diagnostic equipment.
There are 20 trillion of our 60 trillion cells that are involved in the functions of our immune system, and we need as many of these immune cells as possible to be available to cope with any cancer cells which may be present. The title is “The Healthy Smoker: How to Quit Smoking by Becoming Healthier First.” This book provides a comprehensive set of strategies not only to help smokers quit smoking, but also to help ex-smokers avoid the many serious health problems caused by years of smoking.
It is not necessary to live in fear of a future battle with cancer as long as every possible step is taken to help the body avoid this very preventable disease.
